Building a High Quality Math Block: Ensuring Differentiated Instruction and Student Choice

Engaging, rigorous, productive math blocks can be challenging to create.This course will help educators develop a deep understanding of what makes a high quality math block by honing in on the integral aspects of those blocks:  differentiated instruction, small group instruction, and student choice. This course will provide teachers with strategies to move beyond the delivery of basic math content.  Participants will gain in-depth knowledge in each composite area to build their overall expertise in how to plan and implement essential components of rigorous and differentiated math blocks. 

Learning Outcome: 

Participants will leave understanding the components of a strong math block and how to implement these essential components and represent them in a well developed lesson plan.

About the Instructors

Kerri Falzone is the Math Instructional Resource Support / Math Specialist  in Canton.  She holds a BA in Psychology from University of Maine, an MS in Elementary Education from Lesley University, and is licensed in Mathematics grade 1-6.  Kerri began her career as a 3rd grade teacher in the Carlisle Public Schools System before moving to teach 4th grade in the Newton Public School system.  She stepped outside of the classroom for a few years and started her own tutoring business where she and her employees serviced students throughout the greater Boston area in grades K-10 in all content areas, specializing in academic test prep.   Kerri then decided to take on the role of a Math Specialist in the Canton School System where she has been working for the past 15 years.  Additionally, Kerri has worked closely with many other educational professionals to help districts implement new curricula and pedagogies, as well as create standards based curricula when a program was not implemented.  

Susan Brass is the Math Instructional Resource Support / Math Specialist  in Canton.  She holds a BA in Education from University of Florida and an MS in Elementary Education from Northeastern University.  Susan began her career as a  4th grade teacher in the Lynn Public Schools System before becoming their first math specialist.   In 2004 Susan decided to take on the role of a Math Specialist in the Canton School System where she has been working for the past 20 years.  Additionally, Susan has led professional development in her district and has assisted with implementation of two math programs.
