In its mission statement, WIDA notes “Children and youth who are linguistically and culturally diverse bring a unique set of assets that have the potential to enrich the experiences of all learners and educators.” The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is committed to continued training so that all educators have the skills and knowledge to support and educate English Learners in our classrooms. In this workshop, participants will review and explore new teaching strategies to support English Learners and refresh their commitment to providing supportive classroom environments which benefit all students.

Goals and Objectives
During this self-paced workshop, participants will:
- Understand the linguistic needs of English Learners;
- Consider support structures that English Learners need to succeed;
- Learn/Review instructional and assessment practices that have shown evidence of effectiveness for English Learners; and
- Apply/Incorporate these instructional practices to plan a lesson.
Audience
This workshop is intended for all Massachusetts educators including support personnel, technology specialists, curriculum specialists, and professional development specialists. This course will fulfill the required 15 PDPs related to training in SEI or English as a Second Language necessary to renew your Massachusetts professional teaching license.
Structure
This online, self-paced professional development workshop includes an introduction, three content-based modules and a final module with resources to help you create a lesson plan. Each content module includes readings, videos, and activities. The time to complete each content module is estimated to be between three and four hours and the total amount of time required for the entire course is estimated to be 15 hours.
