Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the Building Thinking Classrooms (BTC) framework. Teachers will explore the 14 research-based practices that transform traditional math classrooms into dynamic, student-centered environments that foster deep thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving. Participants will learn how to implement foundational strategies such as visibly random groups, vertical non-permanent surfaces, and using rich tasks. The course focuses on practical application, encouraging educators to test these practices in their own classrooms and reflect on their impact on student engagement, discourse, and learning.

About the Instructor
As the Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator in the Westborough Public Schools, Jenny Deane leads districtwide efforts to strengthen the mathematics curriculum and elevate instructional practices across grades Pre-K through 8. Her work focuses on ensuring that all students have access to high-quality, coherent, and engaging math experiences that promote deep conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills.
She collaborates closely with teachers and administrators to support and evaluate effective curriculum implementation, providing coaching, professional development, and resources that empower educators to bring the curriculum to life in their classrooms. In addition, she oversees the district’s Tier 2 math intervention programming, coordinating targeted supports for students who need additional time and instruction to meet grade-level expectations.
