Course Description:
Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a research-based instructional approach that helps students develop the skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to understand and manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Grounded in the framework of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), SEL focuses on five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. In this course, educators will learn how to design and facilitate rigorous, authentic learning experiences that intentionally integrate SEL with academic instruction while promoting student voice, critical thinking, collaboration, and agency.
Research consistently demonstrates that high-quality SEL implementation improves both student well-being and academic performance. Longitudinal research further indicates that students with strong social-emotional competencies are more likely to graduate from high school, pursue postsecondary education, and maintain stable employment. Through this course, educators will deepen their understanding of SEL and develop practical strategies to integrate social, emotional, and cognitive development into everyday instruction, helping students build the academic and life skills necessary for long-term success.
