Building Your Basic Skills for Remote Learning (5 Workshops)

These workshops introduce participants to basic tools every classroom educator will need to know and use. Tools include Google Classroom, Google Meet, Hyperdocs, Choice Boards, and Padlet.

All modules are self-paced learning experiences so participants can enter at any time, progress at whatever pace is most comfortable, and complete the module when they are ready.

Educators can choose from among any or all of the offerings to increase their knowledge of and comfort with these commonly-used and easily-available tools. Each workshop is a discrete offering and registration for each will be done separately.


Workshop #1: Google Classroom

Note: Your district must be signed up for the G Suite For Education in order for students to be able to use this program.

What is it?

Google Classroom is a streamlined, easy-to-use tool that helps teachers manage coursework. Google Classroom integrates with G Suite (For example, Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc.). With Google Classroom, educators can create classes, distribute assignments, grade and send feedback, and see everything in one place.

Google worked with educators across the country to create this SAFE, easy-to-use tool. It helps students and teachers organize assignments, boost collaboration, and foster better communication.

Training Includes

Creating a class; Having students join; Creating & posting assignments; Organizing topics; Adding links, video, teacher-created materials, and class announcements; Grading (or not); Returning assignments to students

Workshop #2: Google Meet

  • Audience: All Pre-K-12 Educators
  • Dates & Times: Self-Paced Learning Module with rolling admission, roughly 5 hours

What is it?

Google Meet is a video conferencing app and allows you to conduct and participate in meetings using your device. It is the professional extension of Google’s Hangouts platform and is suitable up to 100 participants. Google Meet integrates with G Suite (For example, Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, etc…) versions of Google Calendar and Gmail and shows the complete list of participants and scheduled meetings.

Training Includes

Joining; Sharing links; Muting; Using extensions to enhance viewing; Recording sessions, Saving/archiving recordings

Note: For optimal online learning use, this is best use in conjunction with G Suite, and Google Classroom in particular.

 


Workshop #3: Hyperdocs

  • Audience: All Pre-K-12 Educators

What is it?

HyperDocs is the transformative, interactive Google Doc that replaces the worksheet method of delivering instruction and is the ultimate change agent in the blended learning classroom. With strong educational philosophies built into each one, the use of HyperDocs has the potential to shift the way you instruct with technology. They are created by teachers and given to students to engage, educate, and inspire learning. It’s not about teaching technology, it’s about using the technology to TEACH. 

Training Includes

Understanding different functions of hyperdocs; interacting with and analyzing existing hyperdocs; developing a hyperdoc for your classroom use; implementing a hyperdoc for learning.

What is it?

Graphic organizers are proven to be effective tools for helping students organize and extend their thinking and understanding. Choice Boards are graphic organizers for the digital age. This app allows you to provide a range of graphic organizers from which students can choose to show their understanding and learning.

Training Includes

Understanding different functions of choice boards; interacting with and analyzing existing choice boards; developing a choice board for classroom use; implementing a choice board for learning with students.

Workshop #5: Padlet

  • Audience: All Pre-K-12 Educators
  • Dates & Times: Self-Paced Learning Module with rolling admission, roughly 3 hours

What is it?

Padlet is an online virtual “bulletin” board, where students and teachers can collaborate. The application allows the teacher and students to post and organize their ideas, images, and videos. Padlet allows users to create a hidden wall with a custom URL so it is safe to use with your students.
